Resizing and Naming of Files for Competitions.
N.B. The application "Photoshop"(tm) is used to illustrate the suggested method. Users of other programs should identify and use the relevant sections of their particular application.
1. Resizing Files.
Open the file and do whatever you want to do to improve the image in Photoshop (tm).
For Photofold competitions files should be JPEG and a maximum 1400 pixels wide by 1050 pixels high.
To resize your images using Photoshop (tm) select the Image heading along the top tool bar.
Click on Image and then select Image Size from the drop down box.
Make sure that you have ticked the Constrain Proportions at the bottom of the box.
Resolution of the image is not critical and there is no benefit to a high resolution, around 80dpi is adequate or the resolution provided by your camera will suffice.
For Horizontal Format
Enter 1400 in the Pixel Dimensions Width box. The height will then be calculated automatically.
Provided the height is no more than 1050 pixels then all is OK and you can save the file, possibly with a new file name if you want to preserve the original image as a larger size.
For Vertical Format
If the height is shown as greater than 1050 pixels, then enter 1050 in the Pixel Dimensions Height box.
The width will then be shown automatically and will be less than 1400. You will have to accept this. Save the file.
I have assumed that you will want to maintain the width/height ratio in all cases as this is what I do. It is best to do any cropping before you do the resizing. If you do then the above method will work.
To save the file
Please see the requirements detailed in Naming of Files for Competitions at the end of the Club Rules
Use the File, Save As command and save the file in JPEG format under a new name.
For competition purposes this should include Your Name and the Title of the image as the file name in the
following format: e.g.
JOE BLOGGS[space]-[space]Image Title.jpg
2. Naming of Files and adding details of Title and Author.
The file name is the name given when you use the File Save As command described at the end of section 1.
For Photofold competitions you also have to enter details of the Title and Author in the Properties tab.
The details in the Properties tab are picked up by the program used for competitions.
2.1 Adding Title and Author details using Vista.
To add these details close all applications on your computer.
Go to the Start menu and click on Computer.
Find the drive/folder where you have saved your image.
Find the image (e.g. Image Title.jpg) and place the cursor over it.
Do not open the image. Right click on the mouse button and a drop down box will appear.
From the list select Properties and click on it.
A box with a number of tabs will appear.
On the first tab headed “General” you will see the title e.g. Tree.jpg as previously given. Change this in accordance with the detail given at the end of the Club Rules.
Go to the “Details tab”
A new box will list a number of headings including:
Title
Authors
Place the cursor to the right of the “Title” heading, and enter the title you have decided upon. This should be the same as you included in the file name.
Place cursor to the right of the “Authors” heading and enter your name in the box.
Click OK at the bottom and that is it.
Some Vista versions may require you to click on “Apply” as well or instead of OK.
2.2 Adding Title and Author details using XP
It is basically the same procedure.
After you have named and saved the file as described above.
The “General” tab screen is similar to the Vista one and shows the file name. Amend this in accordance with the detail given at the end of the Club Rules, then go to the “Summary” tab.
Here you will find boxes for Title and Author and you should enter the relevant details for the competitions here.
Click on OK or Apply and that is it.
3.0 Transfer of Images to Flashdrives ( Memory Sticks)
For competition entries, images should be transferred to a flash drive (memory stick) with your name on it.
Load the flashdrive and format it if necessary to delete any existing images. Make sure that all previous images and any software on the flashdrive/memory stick is removed before you add your new competition entries.
Go to the Start menu and click on “Computer”
Find the drive/folder where you have saved your image on the hard drive of the computer.
Find the image you wish to transfer to the flashdrive and place the cursor over it. Do not open it. Right click on the mouse and select the Send to item from the drop down menu.
Click on Send to and a drop down box will open listing all your drives. Select the Flashdrive location and click on it.
A copy of the file should then have been sent to the new location.
Check for successful transfer by opening the Flashdrive and checking that the images are there.
