Photofold Barbican Trip – Wednesday 25th February 2026
After a recent talk at the club 17 members decided to attempt the difficult task of Brutalist Architecture photography – with the target venue - the Barbican centre in London. 11 people boarded the 9:37 from Billericay and joined others later in London. Arriving at Liverpool Street station the short walk to the Barbican only took about 10mins and we were able to walk past and locate “The Globe” pub.
To say that we were lucky with the weather would be an understatement as we were treated to the warmest February day since 2019. This meant that we were treated to clear Blue Skys which gave excellent contrast to the stark grey concrete. The upper walkways provided great views and multiple repeating architectural features, just waiting for those people with Red jackets to position themselves appropriately.
At about 1:00 people started to congregate in “The Globe” for an informal lunch break, grabbing tables and orders as they arrived to give the group flexibility to arrive and leave as they wished. The slight drawback was choosing a central London pub where people didn’t seem to bat an eyelid at the £7.70 price for a pint of lager Shandy, and £12.50 for a medium sized glass of Wine.
Later in the afternoon it was more of the same, Concrete, Blue Skies and more concrete. Apparently, the fountains were turned on at about 5, which gave additional different photographic opportunities.
Ultimately Brutalism proved to be challenging but very enjoyable and definitely something to be attempted again.
