Landguard Point Outing

Landguard Point, Suffolk – Photofold TripFriday 27 March 2026

Twelve club members, along with two partners, set off up the A12 to Landguard Point, undeterred by an indifferent weather forecast.

This headland marks the eastern edge of the mouth of Harwich Harbour, the deep, broad natural harbour formed by the estuary of the River Stour and River Orwell. The harbour divides Essex to the south from Suffolk to the north, and Landguard Point itself—a finger of land projecting into the North Sea—is the southernmost point of Suffolk.

We gathered shortly after 9am at the conveniently located Viewpoint Café for coffee before setting off in various directions to explore the 81-acre nature reserve. Over the next couple of hours, members photographed a wide range of subjects, from the beach and atmospheric military ruins to the striking views of cranes and container ships at Port of Felixstowe.

By late morning, the weather began to deteriorate, bringing persistent—if light—rain. A unanimous decision was made to break early for lunch, and we drove to The Owl and Pussycat for some much-needed sustenance. Over an excellent meal, we discussed plans for the afternoon’s photographic opportunities.

Despite the BBC forecasting a 98% chance of rain, conditions improved noticeably. We split into smaller groups, heading to locations including the sea defences at Cobbler’s Point, the bridge over the Orwell, and—most popular of all—the famous wrecks at Pin Mill.

Remarkably, the rain held off, and the atmospheric wrecks at Pin Mill provided excellent—if muddy—compositional opportunities.

Once again, the trip proved a success, thanks to the enthusiasm and resilience of members in the face of less-than-ideal weather.
